Iowa Attorney General warns of imposter web sites for online driver’s license renewals

DES MOINES – Attorney General Tom Miller warned Iowans seeking to renew their driver’s license online to watch out for look-alike sites that collect fees but do not renew licenses.

“There is only one way to renew an Iowa driver’s license online, and that’s through the Iowa Department of Transportation’s website,” Miller said.  The renewal site is https://mymvd.iowadot.gov.  Miller noted that users should pay close attention to the beginning and end of the domain name to ensure they are accessing the DOT’s official site.  The secure prefix is “https://” and the domain name ends only with “.gov.”

Iowa consumers have complained to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division and the Iowa D.O.T. about websites collecting fees for driver’s license and state ID renewals.  State law does not authorize third parties to renew them.  Consumers report that once they pay a fee through a commercial website, the site either informs them that they must go to the Iowa DOT website, or the site redirects them.

The Iowa D.O.T.’s renewal site places certain restrictions on online renewals.  For example, the service is available to drivers who have a valid license or ID, are a U.S. citizen, and don’t have any medical or vision conditions that would impact their ability to drive.  For more information, go to https://mymvd.iowadot.gov.
