City seeks contractor to remove ice, snow from sidewalks

Snow isn't all that far off in North Iowa.
Snow isn’t all that far off in North Iowa.

MASON CITY – The City of Mason City is seeking a contractor to remove ice and snow from sidewalks at properties where owners fail to clear the walkways within 48 hours.

According to a City bulletin, the City reminded residents that snow and ice shall be removed from the sidewalks within a 48hour period of the end of the snowfall or blowing snow according to Section 51G1 of the City Code. Upon failure to remove the snow/ice from the sidewalks, the City will remove the snow/ice and charge the property owner accordingly.

Apparently, when a complaint is received at City Hall, a contractor is notified of the snow/ice removal locations not before 48 hours after the end of the snowfall, ice or blowing snow event and is expected to clear the sidewalk with 48 hours of receiving the notice. The bulletin stated that the contractor will receive payment for only the sidewalks cleared and not for every notice received. If the sidewalk is cleared before the contractor arrives, the notice is to be marked “Already cleared” and no payment will be received. The City will be responsible for collection of all payments and the contractor will bill the City for services rendered. In an effort to ease collection of payments, the City will require the contractor to provide a before and after digital photograph of each sidewalk that has snow/ice removed. The City will provide the digital camera.

The Contractor shall furnish the City with proof of liability insurance for a minimum of $1,000,000.00, property damage coverage of not less than $500,000, and automotive liability insurance for a minimum of $100,000.00 each person; $300,000.00 each occurrence and property damage liability of $25,000.00.

Interested parties may call City Hall at 641-421-3600.

Y can’t city workers do it

The thing that irritates me on this is the elite’s in town do not have sidewalks in their areas so they don’t have to shovel or pay someone to do it. Also, the slumlords (and there are a lot of them) Buy all these houses and make a profit and then don’t clean the walks, or mow the lawns. There were tow rent houses up here in this block alone that didn’t have the walks cleaned all last winter. In the next block there were three that were not cleaned. They had renters in them but they don’t care.

The problem in my part of town is the snowplows wait until so late in the day. I always clean my sidewalks and the people around me do also. Their was a few times last year when the plows waited until almost sundown to do the final cleanup. Not going to break my back or snow blower to move heavy wet snow. When it froze we just let it go until it melted on it’s own.

Maybe Matt & Max will hire bookmeyer to clear sidewalks.
HA I just made a funny!
