Road repairs nearly complete in East Park

MASON CITY – A seemingly-forgotten stretch of road near the East Park deer pen is being repaired.

Heartland Asphalt has been working on the road just north of the deer pen for most of the week. They completed grading on Tuesday evening.

A chip seal coating is being applied at this time. Workers said they should be mostly complete with the project by Friday.

@Arms Bears-I seem to remember that the rumor is wrong. The roads used to be blacktopped but washed out in the 08 flood. They were filled and graveled at that time. I know for a fact it was blacktopped by the old ball diamond which is now shelter house #2.

Why are these roads not blacktoped or paved? Nobody likes to drive on the gravel. This is our finest park and with all the money spent on lesser projects, all roads in East Park should be hard surface.

That hit the nail on the head John, I couldn’t have said it better….what a shame.

Great question, I’ve often wondered the same. Urban legend is that the city never hard surfaced the roads in the park that are at the greatest risk for regular flooding. The costs of repeated repair and reconstruction would very likely be prohibitive. Maybe an issue to raise with city officials before the election.
