“Huge” fire at Eagle Lake contained early Thursday

BRITT, IOWA – A large fire at Eagle Lake was contained early Thursday morning by emergency responders from the region.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office confirmed there was a brush fire at Eagle Lake which authorities responded to at 8:35 PM.

The Sheriff’s Office said the fire was “huge” and that the fire actually showed up on National Weather Service satellite images.

“It was dry out there,” a Hancock county official said.

A news spotter with a family member nearby told NIT that “the dry dead brush and the wind from the south have really got Eagle Lake on fire. Little if any water in lake.”  The news spotter sent photos of the fire, which can be seen below.

The Britt Fire and Police Departments responded to the scene as did the Garner Fire Department and the Hancock County Conservation Board.  Authorities said there were cabins in a somewhat close proximity to the fire are but no damage was reported.

The fire was contained by 2:15 AM.

Eagle Lake State Park is managed by the Hancock County Conservation Board.  It has a shelter house, and there was no word on any damage to it.
