Waterloo, IOWA — After an early morning shooting, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continues to collect information related to an incident in which Waterloo Police Officer Kyle Law discharged his weapon, hitting and killing 22 year old Derrick Ambrose Jr. of Waterloo, Iowa.
At approximately 01:42 this morning, Sunday, November 18, 2012, the Waterloo Police Department received an emergency call indicating shots were fired at local bar, New World Lounge II, 504 Riehl Street, Waterloo. Officer Kyle Law was working in the area and quickly arrived on scene. Officer Law observed Derrick Ambrose pointing a gun at a crowd of people. Officer Law ordered Ambrose to drop the gun. Ambrose ran from the area and a foot pursuit ensued.
Preliminary investigative findings indicate that during the foot pursuit, at the 500 Block of Riehl Street in Waterloo, Ambrose stepped out from behind a tree. Officer Law shot Ambrose, striking him in the head. Ambrose died on scene.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Continues to investigate this incident, collecting witness statements and physical evidence. The State Medical Examiner will conduct on autopsy on Ambrose to confirm cause and manner of death on Monday, November 19, 2012.
Officer Kyle Law is 3-year veteran of the Waterloo Police Department. Per agency policy, Law has been placed on administrative leave pending the final outcome of the investigation.

Gun happy douches with badges. Why would you aim at someone’s head as an officer of the law? You should always go for the arm or leg, everyone knows that. Maybe Mason city can hire this cop & turn him loose on the idiots in this town, all our cops wanna pull guns on is defenseless animals. 🙁

While no negative judgement should be aimed at the Waterloo Police Officer, I still have to lament the loss of a 22 year old man that was just starting his life.
The officer did nothing wrong.
This young man should not have had a gun in that setting. I am betting his upbringing was seriously lacking! A terrible waste!
I would like to comment on the THIS pathetic individual’s comment on my child’s upbringing 1st you know nothing about us & our lives He had step sisters &hosts of family members &friends that loved him dearly His father & I were & still is in Church I’m a youth Minister & Evangelist,his father was also in the Army serving his duties & trying to protect his country & people like you,we had a beautiful family I was a great Stepmother to this young man my stepson Derrick (DJ) Ambrose from the age of 3yrs old until he turned 16 ,he went to live with other family members,we were always in Church he served well on all Auxiliaries & younth functions he was quiet & polite always was respectful to everyone was his natural demeanor so before making or passing judgement on someone’s upbringing is a slanderous & cruel attack on one’s parenting ethics…

Most, if not all, law enforcement people are trained that if you draw your weapon and need to fire it, you shoot to kill and never fire a warning shot or shoot to wound.
Waterloo Pd Is full of it… They’re runnin around killin people, when Im quite sure if his aim was good enough to target this young man’s head, he could have easily aimed at his arm , leg, anything other than the fatal wound delivered. What they need to do is start solving some of these unsolved murders around there! Heck, my mother was murdered there damn near 20 yrs ago & they still havent solved nor said anything else, in reguards to her murder. GET IT TOGETHER WPD!
And I am sure you witnessed this? And you have the ballistics and other evidence? Why not tell us, and DCI exactly what happened?
Most police officers, when faced with a similar situation, would have shot first and asked questions later. Or should the officer in question given this perpetrator the opportunity to take shots at him?
From the links provided below this article, they (WPD) have solved crimes, including the arrest of a suspect in a murder. So at best, the rest of your comment is specious.
Ok Julie B, when someone breaks into your house and they aim a gun at you, make sure that if you are fortunate enough to have a gun, that you aim it at their leg so that they can still aim for your head to kill you. An officer isn’t going to draw a weapon as a warning, if a situation is serious enough for them to draw their weapon, they are going to shoot to kill…if criminals don’t like them apples, stay home!!
All of y’all are talking so bad about this person with a gun…but if it was y’all’s family with a gun who got shot in the head you would be blaming the police. People make mistakes and if he got drunk and did everything y’all are saying that was his mistake but nothing worth death. You all who said he deserves it should be ashamed and I’ll pray for you because no one deserves death and in that case all of you should be dead over y’all’s mistakes.
