OSKALOOSA, IOWA – Three University of Northern Iowa wrestlers earned first place finishes at the William Penn Open Saturday. Seth Noble (141), Cody Caldwell (174) and Cody Krumwiede (285) all emerged as champions in their respective weight classes.
Noble, a redshirt freshman, began and ended his championship run defeating opponents from Iowa State University. In his first match of the day, Noble pinned ISU’s Matt White in 4:30. Then, in his final match, Noble defeated the Cyclones’ Brandon Jones with a 6-2 decision. He was 4-0 at the William Penn Open, improving his season record to 13-6.
Caldwell used two-straight pins to propel himself into the championship match, where he faced teammateAustin Gelbach. The true freshman went on to earn his second open title of the season, topping Gelbach with a 5-1 decision. Caldwell is now 19-3 this season, competing unattached in open tournaments.
Krumwiede, Caldwell’s high school teammate, captured the heavyweight title with wins over opponents representing Ellsworth Community College and Missouri Valley College. His final win came over Missouri Valley’s James Alter as a 8-5 decision. Krumwiede now has three open tournament titles to his name this season.
Other Panthers with top three finishes at the William Penn Open include freshman Jarrett Jensen (157; 3rd) and sophomore Austin Gelbach (174; 2nd).
