More death in downtown Dubuque as garage fire takes a life hours after fatal shooting

DUBUQUE - A person died in a garage fire in downtown Dubuque Tuesday morning, not long after a person was shot and killed nearby.

DUBUQUE – A person died in a garage fire in downtown Dubuque Tuesday morning, just hours after a person was shot and killed nearby.

On February 8, 2023, at approximately 8:23 AM, the Dubuque County Communications Center received reports of a garage on fire near 14th and Central Ave. The caller advised a subject was inside the garage. Dubuque Police and Fire responded to the scene and found the garage to the rear of 1428 and 1430 Iowa St on fire. Dubuque Fire Fighters extracted one deceased subject from the garage. The deceased subject has not been positively identified. Fire fighters worked to completely extinguish the fire.

Later Thursday, authorities say the deceased person has been identified as 46-year-old Daniel Charles Montelius of Dubuque.

Dubuque Police investigators were on scene working with investigators from the State of Iowa Fire Marshall’s Office. No further information was immediately released.

Earlier this same morning, a person was shot and killed in downtown Dubuque.
