DUBUQUE – A man was shot and killed in downtown Dubuque this morning, police said.
Dubuque police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the 700 block of Rhomberg Avenue this morning. Officers responded to the report of shots being fired at approximately 12:47 AM. Upon arrival, they located a 31-year-old man that had sustained gunshot wounds. Officers attempted life-saving measures on the victim and he was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
The victim in this case is now being identified as Lonnie Edward Burns, of Dubuque. The initial investigation revealed that there was a disturbance involving several persons in the yard adjacent to 711 Rhomberg Avenue when a gun became involved and shots were fired, killing Burns. This was not a random act of violence. Participants apparently fled the area on foot in several directions following the incident. Investigators are actively reviewing cameras systems, speaking with witnesses, and conducting other related follow-up. For any citizens residing in the vicinity of this crime that have personal surveillance systems, police are asking for them to review their footage and to notify one of the listed investigators if they find any persons captured on camera following the incident.
