Roger (Virgil) Newell was born on November 12, 1943 to J. Stewart and Sylvia Mae Newell in Eldora, Iowa. Roger attended Wellsburg High School and he graduated with the class of 1962.

Roger married Joyce Ann in 1966 and lived in rural Kelly, Iowa. They have two children Ryan and Josie.
Roger passed away on February 5, 2023 at the Israel Hospice in Ames, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barbara Smith and brother Irvin Newell.
He is survived by his children Josie and Ryan (DeeAnn) Newell, four granddaughters Dallis Roberts, Kennedy, Marlee and Rachel Newell; and his sister Bonnie Henze.
