The Mason City Mohawk football team opened their season at home with a 48-24 loss to the Des Moines Lincoln Railsplitters. Lincoln opened he game with a touchdown, after converting a 4th down and short with a big running play. They brought in a speedy smaller back on 4th down after opening with three running plays from a couple of bigger guys. They missed the extra point.
Mason City’s offense then took the field and drove right down for an answering touchdown. The extra point was good and the Mohawks were up 7-6.
Lincoln scored on nearly every possession in the game except one, however, as the Mohawk defense struggled to contain the Lincoln running game. Lincoln running backs Kippie Ward and KeeVon Bernstine had several big running plays.
Neither team did much through the air, there were only a few complete passes in the game. Mason City had one big pass play and Lincoln had one decent pass play and that was about it for both teams.
The halftime score was 19-17, Lincoln.
Mason City opened the second half with a nice touchdown drive and took a 24-19 lead. That was it for Mason City, however, as they never got close to the end zone again.
Lincoln scored 29 unanswered points the rest of the way. The Mohawks attempted to come back behind the arm of quarterback Blake Spotts but were unable to put together a scoring drive.
