NIACC sports expansion prompts Mason City to move future water tower site
MASON CITY — NIACC’s expanding athletic complex is prompting Mason City to relocate land reserved for a future water tower on the city’s east side, with the City Council set to consider a land swap involving the college and NIACC Foundation.
The council will hold a public hearing Tuesday, September 1, on transferring city-owned property to North Iowa Area Community College and acquiring replacement property from NIACC and the NIACC Foundation.
The unusual land exchange stems directly from NIACC’s new baseball and softball complex.
Copper thieves sparked Mohawk Square fire and may have returned, Mason City police chief says
MASON CITY — Apparent metal thieves were behind a July fire inside Mason City’s deteriorating Mohawk Square building, and police now believe burglars may have returned to the property, according to new information from Mason City Police Chief Mike McKelvey.
McKelvey disclosed the new details in his department’s monthly activity report included with materials for the September 1 Mason City City Council meeting.
According to the police chief, apparent metal thieves broke into Mohawk Square on July 16.
“One of the burglars apparently tried to cut an energized copper wire,” McKelvey reported.

Nicholas Laurence Wilson, 35, of Waterloo, was sentenced August 20 to 12 months and one day in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to one count of possession of machine guns.
Federal prosecutors said Wilson machined three semiautomatic firearms into fully automatic weapons inside his home.

Three “from” Algona are jailed on $100,000 cash bonds after a frightening Northern Iowa incident in which police say a woman was assaulted inside her home, her two young children were forcibly taken and the suspects threatened to kill the children if she contacted law enforcement.
Police were told that several people had entered the residence, assaulted the woman and forcibly removed her 4-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son.
Both children suffered minor injuries during the incident, police said.
