Born July 6, 1937, in Windom, Minnesota, to Agil and Helga (Nestrud) Kilen, Mary grew up in Lakefield where she graduated from high school before attending Augustana College. She later moved to Clear
Lake, where she made her home for more than 60 years, raising her family and building a life filled with love, laughter, and friendship. On September 15, 1972, she was united in marriage to Michael Grandon in Clear Lake. She worked for several years as an administrative assistant at MercyOne Hospital.
Mary was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and an active part of the Clear Lake community. She delighted in shopping trips with her daughters, whether in Minneapolis or Des Moines, gathering with friends for her card clubs, especially 500, and curling up with a good book. She was also a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi and cherished the friendships made there.
More than anything, Mary’s heart belonged to her family. She was happiest surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always encouraging, attentive, and ready with a kind word or gentle smile. She took great pride in celebrating milestones, big or small, and made each person feel loved and valued.
Those left to carry on her memory include her children, Brenda (Mark) Beernink, Valerie (Dave) Warhol, Lynae (Dan) Hershey, and Mike (Allyson) Glaser; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter soon to arrive; and a great-great-granddaughter expected in September 2025. She is also survived by siblings, Sheila (Virgil) Sigler, John (Mary) Kilen, Cynthia (Hennan) Rost; and brother-in-law, Les Rausenberger.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Michael Grandon; her parents; sisters, Kristene Kilen Baumgard, Barbara Kilen Rausenberger, Helen Kilen Gunst, and Susan Kilen Werner; brother James Kilen; a precious great-granddaughter, Jordan Glaser-Smith; and her first husband, Maynard Glaser.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Eagan Pointe Senior Living and Grace Hospice for the kindness and care they provided to Mary.
