RURAL BOONE COUNTY – Two Iowans died and two more were airlifted with serious injuries to a hospital after a two-car crash Tuesday at a rural intersection.

On December 23, 2024, at 11:48 AM the Boone County Communications Center took a report of a two vehicle, personal injury accident at the intersection of 310th Street and G Avenue in Boone County. Boone County Sheriff’s Deputies, Perry police, Iowa State Patrol, Boone County Hospital, Dallas County EMS and Perry Fire all responded to the scene. Multiple air ambulances from Iowa Methodist and Mercy responded for patient transport.

Javier Hernandez, 39 of Perry, was driving a 2005 Chevy Colorado pickup northbound on G Avenue with an Amelia Hernandez, 62 of Perry, as a passenger. Their vehicle collided in the intersection with a 2022 Volkswagen Taos traveling Eastbound on 310th Street, driven by a Reid Schaefer, 50 of Perry, along with a passenger Christine Schaefer, 49 of Perry.

As a result of the accident, both Javier Hernandez and Amelia Hernandez were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The two occupants of the Volkswagen Taos were airlifted to Des Moines with serious injuries. An updated condition is not known at this time.

The Iowa State Patrol is assisting with the accident investigation, which is on-going.
