Dorothy E. Myhre, 101, of Mason City, was born to Henry and Sophie Brunsvold on their family farm north of Hanlontown, Iowa on November 7, 1922. She died peacefully in her home in Mason City, Iowa on October 14, 2024, just short of her 102nd birthday.

Dorothy, or Dorts, was a daughter, sister, friend, wife and mother, school librarian and community volunteer. She was an excellent cook, having attended Iowa State University Home Ec Department with the goal of becoming a second Betty Crocker. WW2 interrupted that dream, but she kept her family and friends well-fed… especially with cakes and cookies, pies and Norwegian specialties.

Dorothy married Harry L. Myhre on May 3, 1947, in the Little Brown Church, Nashua. They lived in both Hanlontown and Mason City for almost 65 years. He predeceased her in 2012. Together, they had four children: Pamela, Jeffrey (Jayne), Joe (Lorre) and Kris (Jim Stewart), 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren who will carry forward her memory and spirit…but maybe not her penchant for strong black coffee or Black Velvet & 7 highballs which her family firmly believed contributed to her longevity.

Godspeed, Dorothy, you will be remembered well. Per Dorothy’s request, cremation has taken place and private graveside services will be held at a later date.
