A funeral Mass for Anita M. Degen, 90, of Algona, will be held Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Divine Mercy Parish ~ St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona.

A funeral Mass for Anita M. Degen, 90, of Algona, will be held Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Divine Mercy Parish ~ St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. Visitation will be from 9 AM Friday until 10:30 AM at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona. There will be a C.D. of A. Rosary beginning at 8:45 AM at the funeral home.

Anita Marie (Simons) Degen was born November 2, 1933, in Algona, the daughter of George and Cecelia (Beisch) Simons. She grew up and lived in the Algona area her whole life. Anita graduated from Algona High School in 1951. She worked as a secretary for O.B. Lang School right after high school.

On January 28, 1956, Anita married William “Bill” Degen at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. They spent a lot of time at the Whittemore Plantation. After raising eight children, Anita worked for the Algona School District at Lucia Wallace from 1973 to 1999. She then worked at Central Park Pharmacy part-time as a pharmacy technician and Hy-Vee Pharmacy. Anita was actively involved in St. Cecelia Catholic Church and was a 71-year member of Catholic Daughters of America and served as a regent for several years.

Anita loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She and Bill enjoyed many years of travel during the years Bill worked at Everd’s Brothers and she loved visiting their children. She enjoyed gardening, canning, making sauerkraut, sewing, reading, NASCAR, all sports, making maple squares, spending time on the patio, and coffee with the girls.

Anita passed away in her home May 20, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was 90.

She is survived by her children: Mike (Roseann) Degen of St. Helens, OR, Ron (Linda) Degen of West Des Moines, Carolyn (Larry) Bjustrom of Eldridge, Diane (Ray) Dorweiler of Chandler, AZ, Donna (Mike) Kemery of Clearfield, Joe (Kendra) Degen of Algona, and Jim (Sandy) Degen of Kenneth City, FL; 22 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Pat (Donald) Ritter of Olympia, WA and Virginia Wentzel of Rochester, MN; two sisters-in-law, Florence Goff of Sioux City, and Ann Degen of Bancroft; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; her son Timothy; her brother, Bobby Simons; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Bobby (Jean) Simons, Mike Wentzel, Lester “Sport” (Marion) Fuchsen, Len (Virginia) Degen, Bob (Camilla) Degen, Jim Goff, Don Degen, Esther (Vince) Lombardo, and Rev. Jerome Degen.
