Shirley Ruth Ostroot, age 89, of Osage, died Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. She was the wife of an officer in the U.S. Army for twenty years.

Shirley Ruth Ostroot, age 89, of Osage, died Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2023, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Cindy S. Krause officiating. The burial will be held at a later date at North Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Shirley Ruth Ostroot was born on November 21, 1933, in Pelican Rapids, MN. Her parents were Herbert Haugrud and Betsy Kittelson Haugrud. She attended a country school as a child through eighth grade, graduated Pelican Rapids (Minnesota) High School in 1952, and Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis as an R.N. in 1954. She was the wife of an officer in the U.S. Army for twenty years. Her husband was Chaplain (Lt. Colonel) Donald J Ostroot. They married on September 4, 1954, at North Immanuel Lutheran Church near Pelican Rapids. She worked over twenty years as a nurse in various hospitals. She volunteered for the Red Cross; was a lifelong member of the ELCA and WELCA; of Protestant Women of the Chapel and the Officers’ Wives’ Club while her husband served in the military; and volunteered at Mitchell County Regional Health Center and participated in the Shakespearean Club while she lived in Osage, where she moved in 2008. Her favorite activities included leading and attending Bible studies, sewing, gardening, and traveling.

She is survived by her children Faith (Roy) Ott of Osage, Karen (David) Rogers of Elk River, MN, Stephen Ostroot of Fergus Falls, MN, and David (Kristi) Ostroot of Deerfield Beach, FL; her seven grandchildren Janelle Ott of San Angelo, TX, Timothy Ott of Fairbanks, AK, Elissa (DeEll) Heins of Carlton, MN, Christina (Brady) Field of Fergus Falls, MN, Katie (Craig) Michels of Fargo, ND, Ashley Ostroot of Columbus, OH, and Madison Ostroot of Deerfield Beach, FL; and seven great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mary Kay Haugrud of Pelican Rapids, MN and Judy Ostroot of Kasson, MN.

She is preceded in death by her husband Don, her brother Glenn Haugrud, sister Beverly Sponheim, brother Carlan Haugrud, and her parents.
