AMES – UNI wrestling crowned two champions on Saturday afternoon as the Panthers sent 20 wrestlers to the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open at Hilton Coliseum in open competition.
Dajun Johnson claimed victory as an unattached wrestler in the eight-man 157-pound bracket, while Parker Keckeisen took first place at 184 pounds. Wyatt Voelker picked up his second open title at 197 pounds against a seven-man field.
Four Panthers also finished as runners-up in their respective weight classes, including Cory Land (133 pounds), Connor Thorpe (141 pounds), Ryder Downey (149 pounds) and Evan Yant (157 pounds).
UNI compiled 10 victories on the day by major decision, and four by technical falls. The Panthers also recorded eight falls, including two each by Cory Land (133 pounds) and Cael Rahnavardi (149 pounds). Land’s two falls came in quick fashion in his first two matches in just 41 and 32 seconds.
