JUCO Baseball: NIACC sweeps Iowa Lakes

MASON CITY – The NIACC baseball team picked up a pair of 14-13 walkoff wins over Iowa Lakes on Thursday at Roosevelt Field.
NIACC won the first game 14-13 with a walkoff home run from Ike Mezzenga in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the second game, Cayden Nicoletto drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Cody Kelly as the Trojans also won 14-13.

There were a total of 54 runs scored with 51 hits in the ICCAC twinbill. NIACC collected 14 hits in the first game and 18 hits in the second game while the Lakers had nine hits in the opener and 10 hits in the second game.

In the first game, Iowa Lakes scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-4 lead.

NIACC scored three runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning to trim the deficit to 11-8.

Iowa Lakes scored two runs in the sixth inning to push its lead back to five runs (13-8) and NIACC scored two runs in its half of the sixth inning to make it 13-10.

In the seventh inning, NIACC’s Lincoln Berry led off with a solo home run. Kelly then hit a 2-run home run to tie the game and Mezzenga followed with his walk-off winner.

NIACC hit six home runs in the first game. Kelly and Berry both hit two while Nicoletto and Mezzenga each hit one.

In the second game, NIACC trailed 9-7 after six innings and the game was tied 10-10 after seven innings.

Iowa Lakes regained the lead by plating three runs in its half of the eighth inning. The Trojans tied the contest with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.

NIACC’s Jake Green held the Lakers scoreless in the top of the ninth inning setting up the second walkoff win of the day for the Trojans.

In the ninth inning, Kelly reached on a one-out error, Mezzenga singled, Logan Milene walked to load the bases and Nicoletto walked scoring Kelly with the game-winner.

Kelly and Berry both homered in the second game giving them three each for the twinbill.

NIACC (21-14 overall, 10-9 in the ICCAC) returns to action Saturday and Sunday in a four-game series at Marshalltown CC.
