WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Senate failed to convict former President Donald J. Trump on the article of impeachment charge of incitement of insurrection. The vote was 57-43 in favor of guilt, but 67 votes were needed to convict. All Democrats voted to convict, along with 7 Republicans: Burr, Cassidy, Collins, Murkowski, Romney, Sasse and Toomey.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, after his vote to acquit Trump, reportedly said of Trump’s action during the insurrection, “These criminals were carrying his banners. It was obvious that only President Trump could end this. He was the only one that could. … The president did not act swiftly. He did not do his job. He watched television happily.
“President Trump is still liable for everything he did while he’s in office. He didn’t get away with anything yet.”
Trump remains banned on most social media platforms, so his “office” released a statement critical of the impeachment, using the words “witch hunt”.
It was almost a year ago that Trump evaded guilt on two articles of impeachment which included abuse of power by soliciting the interference of Ukraine in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, and (2) obstruction of Congress. That vote was 53-47.
An interesting take. https://t.co/JTjkfUSOqP
