MASON CITY – Mason City police made two arrests after at least four people were spotted trying to steal hundreds of dollars in merchandise from Wal-Mart.
According to police, Wal-Mart employees spotted a theft on July 4th at 4:30 PM. Four people (3 females and 1 male) were seen in the store together but separated at different times. The male – Brenton Svejda, 32 – allegedly helped one of the females load a big screen TV into a cart that the female had already placed a computer laptop into. The pair then exited the store without paying for the tv and laptop. This female was not located but Svejda was. Svejda was arrested for 2nd Degree Theft. While looking for the female who was with Svejda, store employees located the other two females from the group, one of them being Darcy Chase, 33, of Mason City.
Wal-Mart employees became aware that Darcy Chase was allegedly involved in an earlier theft that day that took place around 3:20 PM. She was seen with the same female who was earlier observed allegedly stealing the TV and laptop with Svejda. Chase and this female allegedly stole approximately $1,035 worth of merchandise together. Chase was charged with 2nd Degree Theft (from the earlier theft at 3:20 PM) and jailed them on July 4th.
During this time, Ms. Chase was also found in possession of approx $200.00 worth of suspected stolen property not from Wal-Mart. The property was confiscated and officers began trying to identify which store the items came from. The items were identified as coming from Target. Chase was charged On July 6th with 4th degree Possession of Stolen Property and jailed. Chase posted bond on both July 4th and July 6th and was released.
Charges are still pending on the female who was with Svejda and Chase. The 4th female has not been charged at this time.
