DES MOINES – Newman defeated Council Bluffs St. Albert, 6-5, today in Des Moines in the state baseball tournament class 1A quarterfinals.
Newman rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the sixth inning with 4 runs. A scoreless 7th ended the game.
Max Burt had three RBI’s including a home run, a double and a walk for Newman – the three-time defending state champs. Burt also pitched two innings.
Class 1A semifinals are scheduled for July 30. Newman, on a quest for a ninth state title, plays winner of St. Mary’s, Remsen vs. Notre Dame, Burlington being played Saturday afternoon. UPDATE: St. Mary’s, Remsen won, 11-1.
