Mason City police release clues in missing man case; search is still in progress

MASON CITY – Mason City police say they are still seeking help in locating a missing, local man.

According to a statement released by police Wednesday morning:

We appreciate the public’s help in helping us to look for Alonzo Higgins. We know he got on aMinneapolis-bound Jefferson bus in Mason City on October 1 before 8 am. We are uncertain if Higgins made it to his destination in Minnesota or if he got off at a different stop. Efforts have been made to reach out to bus depots in Minnesota. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is also assisting.

We want to share some of the unusual circumstances surrounding Higgins’ disappearance:

  • Higgins wrote a note that he was going to Minneapolis/St. Paul for a church seminar.Investigators and family have reached out to those organizations and they are unaware of any sponsored events in this timeframe. Higgins has previously attended similar events but has returned as planned.
  • Alonzo expressed some possible paranoid beliefs in a second letter delivered to a different location during the October 1-6 time frame.

  • There also may be a medical condition involved that contributes to the “unusual” events. Wedo not believe that he is a danger to others but suspect he may be taken advantage of in his current state, or at risk due to weather conditions if homeless.

MCPD has been working since we took this report on October 6 to locate Higgins. On October 7, weasked for the public’s help in finding him. Higgins is an adult and told family he was going to begone to attend a church seminar. Following his failure to return home, as expected on October 5, his family reached out to MCPD for help.

We continue to receive help from the community in attempting to locate Higgins. Criminal Investigation Lt. Rich Jensen is the point of contact for MCPD. He can be reached by calling 641- 421-3636. We appreciate the support of the public in helping to get information out about his disappearance. We would ask that you continue to be vigilant as the investigation continues.
