Iowa State’s Kempt a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award

KEMPT

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Iowa State senior quarterback Kyle Kempt is one of 30 football players selected as a candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot.

Kempt, a native of Massillon, Ohio, has been a key ingredient in the turnaround of the Iowa State football program.

The former walk-on, emerged as ISU’s starter in the fifth game of the 2017 season and directed the Cyclones to a victory in the Liberty Bowl, their fourth bowl win in school history.

Kempt was 5-3 as a starter in 2017, including two wins over top-five opponents (Oklahoma, TCU), to earn honorable mention All-Big 12 accolades.

In just eight games played, Kempt broke ISU’s single-season completion mark (66.3) and tossed 15 TDs to just three interceptions, tying for fifth on ISU’s season TD pass chart.

Kempt threw a TD pass in all eight games and posted a pair of 300-yard outings, including 343-yard effort in the victory over No. 3 Oklahoma.

Kempt is ISU’s career leader in completion percentage (66.9) and has a streak of 151 consecutive passes without an interception, the second-best string in school history.

Kempt suffered a knee injury in the season-opener vs. Iowa and is currently out of the lineup while rehabilitating.

Kempt’s whirlwind collegiate career has been well-documented. He is the epitome of perseverance and resolve, spending his first four seasons in college football attempting just two passes. He transferred to Iowa State in 2016 as a walk-on and spent the season on the scout team.

In 2017, his fifth year in college, he entered the season as the third-string quarterback. He finally got his chance to play in the fifth game of the season, and would eventually lead Iowa State to one of its best seasons in 20 years.

He never gave up on his dream, and was ready when his number was called.

The NCAA granted Kempt a sixth season of eligibility in 2018. His story was an inspiration to many people.

Kempt graduated in the Spring of 2018 and is now working on a second degree in computer science. He is scheduled to earn his second diploma from Iowa State in the Spring of 2019. He was a Second-Team Academic All-Big 12 recipient in 2017.
