MASON CITY – The NIACC baseball team hit four home runs and cruised to an 11-0 five-inning nonconference victory over Marshalltown CC Tuesday afternoon at Roosevelt Field in its home opener.

NIACC (25-17-1 overall) received a grand slam from leadoff hitter Shane Kelleher, a two-run home run from Nate VanKan and solo shots from Jacob Hansen and Joey Werner. Kelleher’s grand slam came in the fifth inning and ended the game early via the 10-run rule.

It was the seventh time this season that the Trojans have hit at least four home runs in a game.

Werner hit his solo home run in the first inning and Hansen hit a solo home run in the third inning. VanKan’s two-run bomb came in the fourth inning.

NIACC now has 66 home runs heading into Thursday’s nonconference twinbill at the Wartburg College Junior Varsity.

NIACC’s Ryan Swanson gained the win by tossing a two-hit shutout.

Swanson (1-2) struck out five and walked two in picking up his first career victory.
