Senate confirms Dr. Ben Carson for HUD Secretary; Iowa Senators

Dr. Ben Carson
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Joni Ernst and Charles Grassley both expressed confidence in Dr. Ben Carson, who was named Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development this week.

“Dr. Carson has first-hand knowledge about the importance of building strong communities and the need for affordable housing for all Americans,” Senator Ernst said. “Washington must work together to foster economic development and stability in the market. I look forward to working with this administration to build and strengthen our rural communities across the U.S.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa has a long record of seeking accountability from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and public housing authorities in fulfilling their responsibilities. He also is working toward transparency and clarity of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. Grassley made the following comment on the confirmation of Dr. Ben Carson as HUD secretary:

“When I met with Dr. Carson prior to his confirmation, I told him about the problems I’ve run into at HUD and how I hope for more accountability and transparency for how taxpayer dollars are used to fulfill housing needs under a new administration. I expressed the need for HUD to focus on helping the families and individuals who depend on public housing programs and for the many people on long waiting lists for public housing, while ensuring that money is not squandered in housing authority executive suites. HUD needs to get the biggest bang for the buck. I look forward to having a secretary who will, I hope, make much-needed changes at HUD for the benefit of people in need and taxpayers.”
