Republicans and Democrats declare victory after first presidential debate

DES MOINES – Republicans and Democrats in Iowa both declared victory after Monday night’s presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann released the following statement on the first Presidential Debate:

“Tonight, Hillary Clinton did what she does best, she reinvented history. Donald Trump showed a clear vision for America, while Hillary Clinton showed why she is completely disqualified from serving as our next president. Americans are looking for a new direction after eight years of President Obama’s failures, but all we heard from her was more of the same stale pandering and falsehoods we’ve heard for the past two decades. If memorizing talking points is what it takes to be president, Hillary is right, she has been practicing for years. It isn’t surprising Donald Trump was the clear winner of tonight’s debate considering how Hillary Clinton continued her pattern of dishonesty and failed to fully explain her long history of unethical behavior.”

Meanwhile, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Dr. Andy McGuire issued the following statement on Hillary Clinton’s performance during last night’s presidential debate:

“Last night Hillary Clinton was on point. She was on topic, and she was on fire. Despite constant interruptions from Donald Trump, Clinton maintained her composure and delivered detailed plans that included an economic plan to invest in our infrastructure and small businesses. She behaved like a President, spoke like a President and emerged as the clear winner of the first presidential debate.

“True to form, Donald Trump was totally unprepared to answer tough, serious questions and relied on quips and sound bites for the entire 90 minutes. When pressed on specifics,Trump offered no clear plans and repeated false statements. At times, Trump appeared uncomfortable, unhinged and totally unfit to handle even the smallest crisis.

“With a recent poll showing the presidential race in Iowa in a virtual tie, the stakes were extremely high in last night’s first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Political pundits and media professionals set an incredibly high bar for Clinton and she still managed to clear it with ease. Clinton answered questions with meticulous answers and exhibited poise and confidence throughout the entire debate. Donald Trump, on the other hand, painfully struggled at times and basically admitted the reason for not releasing his tax returns is that he hasn’t paid any income taxes during some years. Trump appeared to be proud of his tax evasion and bragged, “that makes me smart”. Trump remained unapologetic when Clinton pointed out that Trump rooted for the 2006 housing crisis so he could profit financially. A bit out of character, Trump didn’t argue with Clinton and instead, he smugly replied, “that’s called business, by the way”.

“Iowa political operatives, bloggers and journalists chimed in with analysis and debate reaction on social media, and most reactions declared a Clinton victory.”
