MASON CITY – A Mason City woman who tried to burn down an apartment house and was sent to prison only to be released well before her sentence was up has been sent back to jail.

Jacque Sue Paulsen, age 34 pled guilty to second degree arson in 2014 and was then sent to the Iowa Correctional Facility for Women in Mitchelville on a 10 year sentence. She was also ordered to pay court costs and $1,000 in restitution to the building owner, Russ Hardy. She caused about $70,000 damage to the structure, located at 231 West State Street. Mason City police, fire fighters, and Cerro Gordo deputies responded to a fire there at about 7:50 PM on the evening of April 21, 2014. Firefighters used force to enter the front door of the dwelling, where there are four apartments. A fire was on the second floor, inside an apartment. The multi-family dwelling had recently been remodeled. No one was inside the apartment but there were occupants in the other apartments in the building. No one was injured during the fire.

Paulsen was released from prison a few months into 2015 after a court granted her a reconsideration of her sentence. She was placed on probation.

In June, Paulsen was accused of violating her probation. As a result, she was sent to the county jail for two days. She is in the jail now, serving her sentence.
