NEWTON, IOWA – Iowa Governor Terry Branstad called in sick for his scheduled appearance in Mason City to sign a renewable fuels bill and instead signed it in Newton.

Governor Terry Branstad was supposed to sign a bill in Mason City on Monday, May 23 at REG Fuels, but announced that morning that “out of an abundance of caution” due to a “seasonal cold” he wouldn’t be coming to Mason City.

The last time Branstad was in Mason City was March 21, when he gave a ringing endorsement for the Prestage Foods pork plant that the city council later turned down. He attended a press conference that day and mingled with Prestage suits and other “elites” of Mason City. Many thought that after the Governor’s endorsement, the council vote would be a mere formality; in fact a source tells NIT that Branstad was promised the council would go along with the development without much problem, leading to his appearance at the press conference. That didn’t come to be, and the same source that is familiar with the Branstad family tells NIT that Branstad remains “furious” with Mason City for fighting off the development (for now).

Later Monday afternoon, Branstad’s office announced he has “rescheduled the public bill signing” that was supposed to be held in Mason City, which would provide for tax credits and refunds relating to renewable fuels. He changed the location to Newton, Iowa, instead.
