LEON, IOWA – An infant who was unresponsive and placed on life support has died, and now the father faces more serious charges as the child’s mother is also charged.
On April 4, 2016 at approximately 11:55 AM, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call that a three (3) month old infant was having trouble breathing. Emergency crews were dispatched to 446 Washington Street, Grand River, where they discovered the infant was non-responsive. Emergency life-saving efforts were started and the infant was transferred to the Decatur County Hospital by ambulance. The infant, Sebastian Guill was then transferred to Blank Children’s Hospital by air ambulance where he passed away on April 7, 2016. An autopsy was performed at the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office. The results are pending.
On April 5, 2016, the infant’s father, Joshua Russell Guill, 25, was arrested and charged with Child Endangerment Causing Serious Injury (Class C Felony). Since the infant’s death, Guill’s charges have been upgraded to Child Endangerment Causing Death (Class B Felony) and Murder in the First Degree (Class A Felony). His bond has been set at $500,000 cash only.
Sebastian’s mother, Jasmin Leigh Kifer, 20, has also been arrested and charged with Child Endangerment Causing Serious Injury (Class C Felony). Her bond has been set at $10,000 cash only.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Leon Police Department are assisting the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office with this investigation.
This is an ongoing investigation and nothing further will be released at this time.
