“Rock the Block” a positive, fun event for north end

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – Something positive was happening on the north side of Mason City Saturday afternoon.

There was a big event called Rock the Block put on by Rhythm Church at Monroe park between one and four o’clock. There was free food, a live band, inflatables, and prizes, including kids’ bikes and backpacks with school supplies.

There were hotdogs, cooked up by Bryce from Hy-Vee; free water given away by Sandy Shonka, Sarah Beth Wunderlich, Tyler Anderson and Janet Koller; and free Kraft Jello and Girl Scout Cookies to name a few of the free items.

The dunk tank, body painting, prizes and inflatables were a big hit with the children.

Sam Overbeck, son of Deidra Overbeck, and Cameron Demaris, son of Tara Demaris, were having a good time in the Rock and Roll. The moms were having a good time watching them and taking their pictures.

The Jones family (pictured, seated) took a minute and posed for the camera. The children wanted to go have more fun on the playground.

Koller and the gang that was giving away free water wanted people to know that there is going to be another event coming up called “FreeMarket”. This will be Saturday August 25th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at 440 N. Illinois Avenue.

Just like it sounds, Everything is Free, clothes (all ages and sizes), furniture, appliances, kitchen items, toys, books, decorations and much more. “Have something to donate?” they asked. “Bring it with you!”

This event will be put on by the Grace E-Free Church, phone number 641-423-9401or email graceefc@q.com.

What kind of a B.S. comment is that about the National Guard being called out. People do something positive and the kids had a great time and some JERK has to try and put it down. It was wonderful seeing Monroe Park being used for events like this. The band was good. I could hear it at my house two blocks away and everyone had a good time. This was the 2nd event for children here this summer. Keep up the great work. As I have always said, there are nice people with good family’s here in the north end. Just a few creeps that need to be removed.

You Southeast side richies should come over to our side of town more often. Ya just might have some fun! We promise, we’ll lock up all the ghetto slums or whatever you think is on this side of town to make you feel better about yourselves. Heck, I even holstered my side arm for the day, wiped the white dust off my nose, and had a little fun with the little rugrats myself before I put my wife beater shirt back on.

Wow ANONYMOUS, to scared to put a name with that great comment! it was funny and sad at the same time! we northenders do get a bad name,i used to be deserving of the bad name! If you ask me it is Mason city (we got trouble right here in River city) It looks like people are tryn to better it so instead of sitting around being funny, get up and help. I know i want to!

Cheers!

I went there and observed a fabulous event and people having a bunch of fun. The live band was good and really appreciated seeing the North End Folks out with there kids having a great time.

Hats off to the Rhythm Church and the organizers.

Im very greatful I went to ROCK THE BLOCK, not only is it something uplifting for our community, it was great for the kids! I also got to meet up with some friends i havn’t seen in a long time! Thank you very much for bringing something possitive to our community! Much love to all the people who donated their time, money, and friendlyness with us all that day!

How sad you have to be so mean. Their are good families that live on the North end. I noticed that the uppity ups were not in site all day. Kuhn can talk all he wants about how tis their is no two kinds of people mason city Saturday proves it know body in his class of people were there just say’n

It was a positive event that went smoothly, no police that I saw! Come on! Everybody had a fun time! Most northenders are not bad people and have lived and owned homes there for many years! Why make this a ugly thing? There happened to be people from all over Mason city there! Big ,Big THANKS to Rhythm Church and all the sponsors and hope to see it happen again next year!

Who is making this an ugly thing? The pastor of the Rhythm Church, his wife is an old friend and her parents said there was 2 patrol cars there across the street just keeping an eye on things.

My daughter took my grandson there and I just asked her and she said she didn’t see any soldiers there, there was 2 patrol cars there all day and at night too.

I heard they had the National Guard there to protect the people letting it rip on the north end.
