MASON CITY – Mason City’s city council will decide tonight whether to issues themselves and the mayor big pay increases.
The vote is tonight at 7 PM the city council meeting at the public library.
The salaries for the Mayor and City Council have remained unchanged since January 1, 2015. State law does not allow for the compensation of an elected official to be altered in the term the elected official is serving. A change of elected official compensation was contemplated during budget work sessions for FY2023-2024 and subsequently implementation requires a change to City Code. If the City Council approves the changes, the compensation will become effective following the election or reelection of each official beginning with the elected members terms starting in January 2024.
The proposal is to increase the Mayor’s annual compensation from $13,200 to $21,384 and the Council’s annual compensation from $7,400 to $12,000.
