More felony charges for Mason City man caught burglarizing camper

MASON CITY – A Mason City man awaiting sentencing on felony fraud charges was essentially caught red-handed burglarizing a camper.

Mason City police were called to 26 20th Street SE Sunday night at about 11:26 PM after a homeowner reported a burglary in progress. The citizen told police he investigated a noise coming from his camper and discovered 21-year-old Zackary Tyler Scott still inside. He was able to subdue and detail Scott until police arrived to make the arrest.

Scott was charged with felony D third-degree burglary and aggravated misdemeanor possession of burglar’s tools.

The investigation further showed that Scott had broken into the homeowner’s minivan. He was then charged with aggravated misdemeanor burglary of a motor vehicle.

Scott was jailed and held on $6,000 bond.

Scott is awaiting sentencing in a felony fraud case at this time. Earlier this year, a woman told Mason City police that a man had been taking and using her credit card without her permission. Police investigated, and police alleged that Scott used a stolen credit card to purchase goods and services at the end of July in the north Iowa area over several days. Scott was charged with ongoing criminal conduct, forgery, and unauthorized use of a credit card. After a guilty plea, he will be sentenced on December 7.
