Effective March 2, the City’s sanitation sticker program will see a change. The new stickers will be a different color with an increase in the cost per sticker. The new sanitation stickers will be lime green and will replace the orange stickers residents currently use. The cost of the new lime green sanitation sticker will increase from $1.00 to $1.20 each.
The current orange sanitation stickers will still be accepted after the March 2 date. Residents may use either orange or lime green colored tags.
So how did the heat brought on to the garbage men ever come out?
Do they still get to run off to their second job by noon and get paid by the city for it,

I get what you are saying, but there are people everywhere who either complete their job and go home early, work for a salary while working plus or minus 40 hours a week, or just flat out scam their jobs and find a way out of working their full shifts. These fellows are just doing what the job allows them to do. They pick up the trash and go home and get paid to do it. So what? I once had a job reading gas / electric meters in Iowa City area. I was 24 years old, fresh off the Iowa track team, and took over from a man about 65 years old. The job was all on foot. I got paid for eight hours a day no matter how long it took me. I would get done in 3-4 hours. That’s what the job allowed and my employer was fine with it. Why punish the sanitation workers just for doing what their job description says? Why not blame city hall. They have the power to re-write the job descriptions if they want to, even with a union in there, they can negotiate. The real problem is, again, with the city leadership and management, not with the people doing their jobs. By the way, maybe these guys are good at their jobs, did you ever think of that? Can you imagine Eric Bookmeyer, Robin Anderson, Janet Solberg, creeps like that, outside in sub-zero weather picking up trash? I have a feeling they would last a couple hours and then give up. Eric would be on the phone to his wife, begging her for help. They don’t have it in them.

I also agree we would be in garbage up to our a$$ if we had the likes of the chamber of communist driving our garbage trucks… However, i find it rediculous be paying these guys for 8 hours for a job that takes 4 or 10 for a job that takes 5 or whatever the case may be and here is why.. The main one, which I speek from experiencnce…
Is they will hurry at the equipments expense ie flooring the truck then standing on the brakes.. Perhaps if we didnt have to buy new trucks and parts so often we wouldn’t need a extra 20 cents on the sticker.. Also I’m sick of the recycling (garbage spreader) truck flying around wings open and pizza boxes, milk jugs and newspapers left at every other turn… Perhaps if they slow down I wouldn’t have to wonder what gift I will be left with.. Done at noon boys, GOOD, grab a broom!!!
Yes you make some fair points. Maybe they could slow down and not leave some stuff behind.
@Matt-I too have noticed that they really pound the equipment real bad. That is always a drawback of piecework. Productivity goes up but the damage to the equipment far exceeds the savings. Those trucks would last longer than five years if they were not beat to hell.
I think that starts with management, and I’d point the finger at the top. The workers should be instructed to slow down, if that is the case, and be more careful with the equipment. If they are never warned (and maybe they have been, who knows?) about keeping the equipment in good order, nor made to explain damages, then the situation would simply continue. Seems, though, that the monthly fees charged to those who use the service cover those repairs, pay the wages, run the department. So, again, as long as the fee is reasonable, I fail to see where there is a problem. The problem, as I see it, is manufactured by the mayor, Hickey, Solberg, and a few others who resent the sanitation workers. They won’t stop until the department is privatized, sources tell me.
@Matt-I have heard it is primarily Hickey. Now he might have gotten the mayor on his side but I have heard it is in retaliation for his father being fired. Most good company’s have gone away from piece work just because of the wear and tear on equipment. They have found ways to increase the productivity without destroying valuable equipment. I see the sanitation works jam on the fuel, go 30 feet and jam on the brakes and then do it all over again. Now, that is probably the way they were timed.
I think you’re right on all accounts. It goes back to training and supervision, I think. This is probably why they want to privatize; it’s easier to deal with private companies, I suppose city hall thinks, then to deal with the union and the employees. Problem is, those private companies will end up skyrocketing our trash pick-up fees real fast once the city is out of the sanitation business, because they know we can’t go back. It doesn’t end up working out so good for the community.
As for Hickey, everyone knows he has it in for city workers. It’s not a well-kept secret. I heard the same story you heard.

So, they found a way to raise the price even more. It should not be a surprise to anyone with the bunch we have in city hall. The voters let them in by not getting off their dead butts and voting.

When a person has to work over 4 hours a day before any pay is earned for themselves amounts to Government Tax Slavery.
Create another program, raise taxes, and we get promised more goodies. How stupid is that?

I think the majority of council members in MC are Republicans. Their ties with the Chamber sort of point that way.
@bodacious-I think you are right on this one. Kuhn is a democrat but I think the others are republican. If you can call them that. It is a shame that political party’s have anything to do with our local office’s. I don’t think they promote it very much. But, I remember that Urdahl spied on some of the candidates at the democratic headquarters and then ran to his buddy’s on the other side. At least that is what I was told.
I claim to be an independent but that doesn’t matter because a politician is a politician. Once they get into power they will do whatever it takes to stay there. I think term limits should be there for every office, local, state, federal. I understand that our founding fathers revolted because of taxes but the government needs money to operate but enough is enough.
@Maybe-I completely agree with you on this. Term Limits are the answer but I don’t think we will ever get any politicians to present it.
Lets see, the school raised taxes about 30%. The gas tax just went up 30%, the teachers want 7% more and want to work ten less days.
The patrol and cops are out stopping people without cause, trying to write any ticket they can to raise funds for the state.
