NIACC’s Palmeter earns first-team all-American honors

LUBBOCK, Texas – NIACC sophomore Hannah Palmeter ran to a third-place finish in 17 minutes, 51 seconds as the No. 14 Lady Trojans finished 13th in the team standings with 398 points on Saturday at the 2014 NJCAA cross country national championships.

El Paso Community College won the women’s team race with 64 points. Barton Community College’s Lydia Mato was the individual champion in a time of 17:05, followed by Iowa Central’s Viola Kebenei in 17:29.

Palmeter, who finished sixth last year at the national meet, tied her best 5K time this season and earned first-team all-American honors. Palmeter also ran 17:51 at the NJCAA Region XI meet, which set the school record.

Palmeter was also selected to the United States Coaches All-American team.

She became the school’s second team all-American. Anna Buenneke was a second-team all-American in 2010 when she placed eighth and a first-team all-American in 2011 when she placed second.

NIACC’s Nicolle Hewett was 91st overall in 20:03, Alyssa Cowan was 98th in 20:11, Lattie Crozier was 143rd in 20:51, just ahead of teammate Kalama Towarap, who was 144th in 20:51. Emmorie Stokka was 183rd in 21:30 and Leta Jaquis was 201st in 21:47 for the Lady Trojans, who also finished 13th in the team standings last season.

Hewett, Cowan, Crozier, Towarap, Stokka and Jaquis all ran personal-best times.

Meanwhile, the NIACC men finished eighth in the team race with 313 points after finishing 15th last year.

Iowa Central won the team title with 62 points. Central Arizona’s Harry Mulenga won the individual title in 24:18.

The No. 8 Trojans were paced by Trey Simons, who finished 32nd in a time of 26:14. Jaime Zarate was 37th in 26:23, Imad Amenzou was 57th in 26:46, Tyler Randall was 76th in 27:13, Colby Kraninger was 126th in 28:16, Oryiane Espeut was 179th in 29:16 and Ricky Jeray was 192nd in 29:36.

Simons and Zarate were selected to the U.S. Coaches all-American team.
