IOWA CITY — An Iowa resident has been forced from their home following a mid-afternoon structure fire that tore through a residence Thursday. The Iowa City Fire Department was dispatched to 1620 Crosby Lane at 4:06 p.m. on April 30, 2026, after witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke billowing from the front door.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within five minutes, encountering heavy smoke emerging from both the roof and the doors of the house. Crews quickly entered the structure and located the source of the blaze in the basement. The fire was successfully brought under control just ten minutes after units arrived on the scene.

While the rapid response prevented the fire from consuming the entire building, the aftermath remains costly. Total damages to the property are currently estimated at $50,000. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among civilians or the first responders on the scene.

As a result of the damage, one occupant has been displaced. The Iowa City Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Iowa City Police, and MidAmerican Energy.
