Iowa man accused of killing 3-year-old girl remains jailed after hearing

MARSHALLTOWN – A man who police say grabbed a 3-year-old girl and threw her to the ground and killed her remains in jail on $1 million cash bond after his first court hearing Tuesday.

Branden Collins, age 28, was arrested after an August 20, 2014 incident where police allege he was watching a group of children when he grabbed his girlfriend’s daughter, Jossilyn Starn, and threw her to the ground, causing a fatal head injury. After he called 911, the girl was flown to a Des Moines hospital where she later died.

After an investigation, Collins was arrested and charged with murder in the first degree, child endangerment causing death, child endangerment causing serious injury, and possession of marijuana.

Collins was in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing and remains jailed in the Marshall County Jail.
