MASON CITY – North Iowa Area Community College offers classes at the College’s area Education Centers. There are centers located in Charles City, Garner, Hampton, Lake Mills and Osage. The following classes are being offered and are grouped by city. Please see registration details at the end of each city listing.

Charles City

•       On Wednesday, March 20, a class titled Dog Training – Puppies will be offered from 5:30-6:15 p.m. and continue on Wednesdays until May 1. No class will be held on April 24. This class will take place in rooms 108-110 of the Charles City Education Center with instructor Teri Turner. Promote socialization, desired behavior, and better health in your puppy.  You and your puppy benefit from instruction during the early weeks in the house.  This is a 6-week program and the first class is orientation for family members – no puppies – and bring proof of vaccinations to the first class. Children must be at least 13 years old to participate.  The puppy must have his first vaccinations and be 8 to 16 weeks of age the first night of class.  Tuition is $65; class limit is 8 dogs. •       On Wednesday, March 20, a class titled Dog Training – Beginning will be offered from 6:30-7:15 p.m. and continue on Wednesdays until May 8 with no class being held on April 24. This class will take place in rooms 108-110 of the Charles City Education Center with instructor Teri Turner. Use positive reinforcement training to teach your dog right from wrong. Teach your dog basic obedience commands such as: sit, down, off, come when called and walk on a loose leash as well as how to be an enjoyable member of the family.  The dog must be 5 months old at start of classes. The first class is orientation – no dogs in attendance and owners must bring proof of current vaccinations. Children must be at least 13 years old to participate.  Tuition is $79; class limit is 6 dogs. The course number is 86438, please have ready when registering.

•       On Wednesday, March 20, a class titled Dog Training – Advanced will be offered from 7:30-8:15 p.m. and continue on Wednesdays until May 8 with no class being held on April 24. This class will take place in rooms 108-110 of the Charles City Education Center with instructor Teri Turner. Work on completing the AKC Canine Good Citizen certification with your dog after completing basic obedience class. The first class is orientation – no dogs in attendance and owners must bring proof of current vaccinations. Children must be at least 13 years old to participate.  Tuition is $79; class limit is 6 dogs.   The course number is 86440, please have ready when registering.

•       On Saturday, March 23, a class titled Enhance Your Reiki with Healing Stones will be offered from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Charles City Education Center in Room 110. Reiki has its own wonderful healing benefits.  In this class, we will explore the seven major chakras and will discuss the locations, properties, and blockages that can occur.  You will discover some of the healing stones associated with the chakras and their properties, and you will experience how adding these stones to your Reiki can enhance the healing session.  You will receive a stone kit to take home and use. Session includes a lunch break.  Prerequisite:  Reiki level 1.  Limit 25 students.   Tuition of $80 includes all supplies; bring a notebook.  Instructor is Michelle L. •       A class titled Watercolor Painting-Tulips will begin on Thursday, April 4 and continue on Thursdays until April 25. This class will take place at the Charles City NIACC Center from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Beginning to intermediate adult painters will benefit from instructor Nancy Scherer’s expertise with watercolor painting. Adults at any stage of their painting journey are welcome. If you’ve always wanted to learn to paint with watercolor, but needed a launching pad, this is a great place to start. Students are required to bring needed supplies to the first class; please contact the Charles City Center for a list. Garner

•       On Tuesday, March 12, a class titled Ponds and Water Gardens will be offered from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. Adding water to a garden has become very popular. Look at affordable options to transform an outdoor living space to a beautiful paradise, a focal point of any garden or provide backyard habitat. Ed Schroeder will assist you with choosing the right spot for a pond, options available for a liner and the type of pump that will suit your space, no matter how large or small. Tuition for this course is $12. The course number is 86431, please have ready when registering.

•       On Thursday, March 28, a Babysitting Clinic will be offered from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in the Ventura Lunchroom. Instructor is Carol Peterson. Quality babysitting skills are taught in this course for students 11 to 15 years of age. Safety of the child and home, playing with children, making games, guiding children, and first aide will be discussed. The tuition for this course is $15 and the course number is 88073. •       A Yoga class will be held on Thursdays, April 2 to April 30, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Garner Education Center. Even simple changes in lifestyle can add up to big benefits and help you feel good. In this class we will work toward greater flexibility, strength, and stress reduction with certified teacher Barb Eisenmenger. Bring a yoga mat or large towel and water. Wear non-restrictive clothes. It’s never too late to begin! Tuition for this course is $25 and the course number is 86432, please have number ready when you register.

Hampton

•       A class titled Gluten-Free and Whole Food Eating will be held on Saturday, March 9, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the Hampton Center One. Does your stomach hurt after you eat? Do you have problems digesting food? 15 percent of people have some degree of gluten sensitivity-find out more about it in this class. Join Shelly Winfrey, who has lived gluten-free for many years, as she teaches how to determine what is gluten and gluten-sensitivity. Celiac disease, whole food eating and the gluten-free diet will also be discussed. Tuition for this course is $9 and the course number is 86473. Please have course number ready when you register.

•       A class titled Babysitting Clinic will be held at the Hampton Middle School. The class will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. beginning on Tuesday, March 12, and conclude on Tuesday, March 19. Quality babysitting skills are taught in the course for students 11 to 15 years old. Safety of the child and safety in the home, plus games and easy to make snacks for children are the focus of this clinic with teacher Mallory Hartwig. A babysitting directory will be published. •       On Saturday, March 16, a class titled Art on a Whim will be offered from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Hampton Center One. Create your own painted whimsical scribble art on a 6×6 canvas. You will make a small project to take home, sit on your desk or give to a friend. A copied print of this image will also become part of your collage if you attend all three sessions with Pamela Warwick. There is a $15 supply fee which can be paid in class. •       On Monday, March 18, a class titled Over 50 Series: Retirement will be held at the Hampton Center One from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There are a lot of questions around this subject and this class will continue with answers to the hard questions raised in the first Over 50 Series class. Attorney Megan Rosenberg leads us in a discussion of planning your will, what an estate is and what you can do to plan ahead for future challenges. Lake Mills

•       A Yoga class will be offered from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Lake Mills Education Center beginning on Wednesday, March 6 and continuing on Wednesdays until April 10. This is a gentle, restorative yoga class to stretch and relax your muscles and support your health. In this class we will work toward greater flexibility, strength and stress reduction with certified teacher Carol Soma. Bring a mat or large towel and water. Wear non-restrictive clothes. •       On Wednesday, March 20, a class titled Estate Planning will be offered at the Lake Mills High School in the Medial Center from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Have you and your family talked about the transfer of your property and assets after you die? Learn all about the tools for estate planning to make the transition easier for your family. Wills, power of attorney and trusts will be covered by Attorney Daron Frtiz. •       On Tuesday, March 26, a class titled Essential Oils will take place at the Lake Mills Education Center from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Essential oils can quiet the mind and heal the body. With a busy lifestyle, we are bombarded with many influences and opposing forces that can throw our equilibrium off. This is a hands-on workshop where you will blend and combine pure oils to achieve positive results. $10 supply fee is paid in class for three make-and-take personal samples. Osage

•       On Monday, March 11, a class titled Pressed Floral Cards will be offered from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Osage Library. Create your own distinctive greeting cards and gift tags with locally pressed flowers to brighten someone’s day any season of the year.  Floral pressing techniques and tips will be discussed.  Supplies included in tuition.  Tuition is $18. •       On Friday, March 15, a class titled Watercolor Painting: Tulips will be offered from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and continue on Saturday, March 16, from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. This class will take place in the Osage Middle School Art Room. Beginner to intermediate adult painters will benefit from Nancy Scherer’s expertise with watercolor painting.  Adults at any stage of their painting journey are welcome!  A variety of techniques will be demonstrated with vignettes and examples of tulip gardens to still life will be shared.  If you’ve always wanted to learn to paint, but needed a launching pad, this is a great place to start. •       On Tuesday, March 19, a class titled Beginning Basket Weaving will be offered from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Osage Library. Create a beautiful windowsill basket (14 X 5 X 7) in one sitting – just in time for spring!  Julie Morische will show you the art of weaving a delightful, yet simple basket.  Many other basket weaving styles will be displayed to further your understanding and enjoyment of this fine craft.  Bring scissors and a straight-edge medium screwdriver to class.  $17 basket weaving kit purchased in class.  Please register by March 4.  Tuition is $10. •       On Wednesdays, March 20 – April 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and Sundays, March 24-April 14 from 4:30-5:30 p.m., a class titled Couch to 5K will be offered at the Osage Library. Spring into action!  Join Bridget Klapperich, recreational runner, where you will learn the basics of running (form and pace), become inspired, and get in shape.  The goal is to run a 5K in April.  Limit 15 students.  Recommended running attire.  Participants should have the ability to walk at least one mile to enroll.  Tuition is $29. •       On Mondays, April 1-May 13 from 6:30-7:30 p.m., a class titled Tai chi for Arthritis will be held at the Osage Middle School Gym. Improve muscle flexibility and muscle strength with this Tai Chi practice. Increase heart and lung capacity, align your posture and improve balance with this effective, safe low impact exercise program designed for those with arthritis. Wear low, flat shoes and comfortable clothes. The tuition for this class is $29 and the course number is 86529, please have number ready when registering.

•       A course titled Flash Fiction will be offered on Thursday, April 4 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Osage Library. Some say, “Flash Fiction – once you try it, you’re hooked.” Learn to write a complete story in 100, 55, or even less words complete with characters, plot, conflict and resolution, and then find out if it’s true. Jed Magee will show you how to tighten up your writing by eliminating unnecessary words and phrases. There may even be a group exercise in writing a Flash Fiction story. Tuition for this course is $15 and the course number is 86598, please have number ready when you register.
