MASON CITY – A briefly “tense” situation at the Mason City Public Library Saturday was quickly squelched after police visited and had a chat with a man.
A Minnesota author, Liz Hatle, was at the library Saturday speaking to about 57 folks about her book covering the history of the Ku Klux Klan in Minnesota.
NIT was was informed that a man attended the book discussion and proceeded to cover his face and otherwise act suspicious. He wore sunglasses and covered his face with a hat. He then hid in a nearby area, not far from where the discussion was taking place. Some people in attendance noticed the odd behavior, and one person made a call to police, as some speculated that the man may have been sympathetic to the Klan. In the meantime, two other men entered the room, spread out, and seemed to be acting a similar to the first man.
The men were watched as the book discussion continued, and then police arrived. The last two men “disappeared” as the first man was talked to by officers. He left without a disturbance.
During the course of the book discussion, Library Historian Terry Harrison tlked about the history of the Klan in Mason City. He produced KKK robes that the library possesses, and showed them to the people in the room.

Went to school with Todd, at Roosevelt. He got into lot’s of fights, was in the principle’s office more then class. Usually got his butt kicked, but he never seem to give up. He was very funny tho, made us laugh alot. The way he rubs some the wrong way I was surprised he was in politics. Always in trouble. You never saw no kid could make teachers look dumb like Todd did.
