Suicide ruled manner of death for Knapp, found in burned car

GUTHRIE ENTER, IOWA – The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a burnt out vehicle on March 30, 2014. Upon arriving at the scene, the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office discovered a body inside the vehicle. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office then requested the assistance of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, with the assistance of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the identification of the body which was discovered in the vehicle to be that of Bobby Joe Knapp. An autopsy was performed at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner on the body of Bobby Joe Knapp on March 31, 2014 by Dr. Julia Goodin. Dr. Goodin determined the cause of death to be multiple cuts of the upper and lower extremities complicated by smoke and soot inhalation. The manner of death will be certified as Suicide.

The investigation was conducted by the Guthrie County Sheriff’s office, Division of Criminal Investigation and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office.
