DES MOINES – Police in Des Moines were happy to report that they received a check from a club that will allow the police department to purchase a bullet-proof vest for a canine officer.

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Veterinary Technology Club presented a $1,450 check to the Des Moines Police Department’s Canine Unit Friday at the FFA Enrichment Center located on the DMACC Ankeny Campus. The money will be used to purchase a special bullet-proof vest for a new four-legged officer. The DMACC Vet Tech students raised the money by having dog washes and bake sales throughout the year, the Des Moines Police Department reported via social media.

The police department’s canine unit conducted demonstrations including a drug find and an officer posing as a would-be bad guy. The officer wore a bite sleeve used to train K-9s.

“Our sincere thanks to the generous students of the DMACC Veterinary Technology Club,” the department said of the donation.
