MASON CITY – The following candidates have officially filed papers to run for Cerro Gordo Supervisor, District 2, to replace Bob Amosson who declined to run again:
Republican Party
Casey M. Callanan
Ivan Lynn Good
Scott Kennedy
Democratic Party
Doug Nelson
Adam Wedmore
John Drury
Michael J Grandon
The deadline to file candidacy was today at 5 PM. Michael Grandon, NIT is informed, brought his papers in to the courthouse late Wednesday and entered the race after meeting with other key Democrats. Grandon was the Cerro Gordo County Treasurer from 1975-2011.
“He will be formidable,” a county political guru told NIT.

@ Mediator, I hope you are wrong that the candidate with the most money will win. I know a member of the county Democratic party who has it on reliable authority that Gary Blodgett sent out a letter for Callanan that raised over $20,000. Old Doc and his fellow One Percenters should not be able to buy another supervisor. It is bad enough that old doc bought Urdahl’s way in, and paid for mailings that helped to defeat Chris Watts. Enough is enough. Democracy for the few is undemocratic.
I don’t mean the most money to equal the most backing. It’s when people believe in someone and go out of their way to support them with their time and effort as much as money.
You do need some money to get the word out, but it has been proven many times that you can’t just buy an election.
Find someone you believe in and let everyone know how you feel, convince them and ask them to spread the word. That’s backing, to me.
@ Mediator I like Nelson he knows the stuff for the job. Just rember every body do not vote for the Callahan kid he use to work for Gary Blodgett, old doc why, he is raising him alot big money just like he done Urdahl. We don’t need no BOS all filled up with Gary’s cronys.
I think Mike Grandon being in the race is great! Strong candidates make everyone better.
What are your thoughts on Doug Nelson?
Nelson is the only candidate that lives in the rural part of the county/pays the county rural levy on his home. He lives on the gravel, too. He’s been attending the supervisor meetings for 8 years and knows how it’s done. He’s a farmer rather than a salesman and knows drainage and manure management. He’s led the state Toastmasters organization with scores of volunteers. He’s not a big farmer so he has the time. He seems to have good ideas.
What do you think of him?
Oh, I forgot to add… he’s a mediator. Got to love that in government!
He seems like a square shooter and has some moxey.
Ya know mediator, if Nelson has any of your skills/abilities at creating constructive dialogue, he should do well.
You seem to know him rather well. 🙂
I do. Better now than when I was in my 20s-30s. Maturity lends perspective.
To many people running. It will divide the vote and cause the one with the most backing to win. Happens all the time.
Do you mean the most money? The candidate with the most backing by the people should win, right?
That is only for the 2 party system I was told. Non party candidates can still file for many months to come. That’s what the lady at the Auditor’s office in the Courthouse told me anyway. It better be open, because I’m considering running.
