Marcos Alberto won $30K

DES MOINES, Iowa – A Mason City man decided to purchase a “Holiday Crossword” instant-scratch ticket while traveling for work and ended up winning a top prize of $30,000.

Marcos Alberto, 22, said he and his colleagues were on their way to Forest City to do some work when they stopped at Casey’s, 106 S. Fourth St. in Forest City.

I told the driver I was like, ‘No way this is happening,’” Alberto said. “He was like, ‘What, big winner?’ And I was like, ‘You’ve got to check this for me. I’m not sure if I’m seeing things or not.’”

After Alberto’s co-worker from Mason City Recycling Center also counted ten words, which would win him a top prize, he knew it was real. He called a friend to tell her the news.

“After a while she believed me,” Alberto said as he claimed his prize Dec. 18 at the Iowa Lottery’s regional office in Mason City.

Alberto said this win will take a lot of weight off his shoulders; he will be using it to pay bills.

Since the lottery’s start in 1985, its players have won more than $2.9 billion in prizes while the lottery has raised more than $1.4 billion for the state programs that benefit all Iowans.
