Bunny Show Held at Willowbrook Mall

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – Every year for Easter weekend, the Willowbrook Mall has bunnies. This year was no different. Friday had two vendors with a variety of different types of rabbits.

There was a vendor from Ellsworth, Iowa, that informed us, “Bunnies lose heat through their ears, they don’t sweat. That’s why when it’s warmer, they grow bigger and seem more transparent. When they get too much calcium in them, they will flop over.”

He allowed us to put a couple different types of bunnies side by side to show the difference. There were two black bunnies. The velvety soft one was a Rex and the more furry one was a Poland Rabbit. He also had a New Zealand rabbit that was hopping from cage to cage.

The bunnies are stamped with symbols or numbers in their ears for a couple of reasons. It allows the owners to tell them apart when they take them to rabbit shows. The judges only see the numbers and the owners know which rabbits are theirs.

Randy and Bobbi Coats, from Boone, were also there. They had many cute bunnies. Some of them were cuddled together, others were bathing themselves, some were sleeping and some were just watching. They had New Zealand rabbits and California rabbits.

Both these vendors will be at the Willowbrooke Mall on Saturday. If anyone is planning to buy a bunny, remember that a rabbit can live up to ten years, need special food, housing and will need vet care. If you cannot commit to this, don’t buy one.
