Latham named to congressional energy task force

Iowa Congressman Tom Latham was named to the House energy task force that will promote real solutions to the country’s energy challenges. |Iowa Congressman Tom Latham was named to the House energy task force that will promote real solutions to the country’s energy challenges.

The House Energy Action Team will push Republican energy policies that will address rising energy prices, create jobs and enhance our national security by promoting energy independence for American families, small businesses and farmers. The task force, which was launched by House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California, consists of House Republicans with expertise on energy issues.

“Like Americans across the country, Iowans are feeling the pain of rising gas prices every time they fill up their tanks,” Congressman Latham said. “It’s becoming increasingly important for our country to have a comprehensive and coherent energy policy that helps families, farmers and small businesses. This task force will highlight and promote some of the most important solutions being considered by Congress that will help us lower energy costs, create jobs and promote great American energy resources that are controlled by America. As always, I’ll make sure that Iowa’s renewable energy solutions play an important part in the conversation. For years, Congress has talked about the importance of forming a comprehensive energy policy while continuing to kick the can down the road. I go into this task with the point of view that we don’t have time or tolerance for any more excuses, bickering or finger-pointing. It is time for a plan that provides real long-term solutions.”

In recent years, misguided energy initiatives by some in Washington have focused on implementing higher energy taxes and cap-and-trade schemes that would raise utility costs by thousands of dollars on Iowa families, farms and small businesses and destroy jobs. Congressman Latham noted that he supports a vastly different strategy that empowers America. As a member of the task force, he will pursue a comprehensive common-sense policy that increases clean, safe and responsible American energy production that is controlled by Americans, encourages conservation and develops innovative renewable energy sources.

“Gas prices continue to rise, and the American people are fed up,” Congressman Latham said. “For years, I’ve supported legislation that takes an all-of-the-above approach to energy, but Washington has failed to provide serious leadership. No more excuses. It’s time for a new approach to energy that reduces costs, creates jobs and ends our dependence on foreign energy sources. American families have waited long enough for real solutions.”
