Latham statement on White House budget request

Washington, Feb 14 – Iowa Congressman issued the following statement in response to the White House’s budget request for fiscal year 2012.|Washington, Feb 14 – Iowa Congressman issued the following statement in response to the White House’s budget request for fiscal year 2012:

“Just this weekend President Obama said that his budget would require the government to “live within its means.” Only in Washington can running a $1.6 trillion deficit in a single year be considered living within our means.

“The White House’s spending plan contains only more of the same massive spending policies that have driven our nation’s debt to record heights over the past few years. It relies on going further into debt by borrowing and piling $1.6 trillion in new taxes on the backs of already struggling workers, families and employers to pay for an even bigger federal government than we have now.

“The American people are demanding a renewed commitment to fiscal responsibility, but this budget simply doubles down on the failed tax-and-spend policies that are keeping a sustained long-term economic recovery from taking root.

“I am committed to making the difficult decisions to rein in spending, cut the size, scope and cost of our bloated federal government and move our country forward.”
