John Lawrence Pickar, 76, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2026, at The Highlands in Decorah, Iowa, following a courageous battle with dementia.

John was born on October 31, 1949, in Riceville, Iowa, to Elmer and Anna Mae (Spradling) Pickar. John graduated from Cresco High School. He enlisted in the Army where he was stationed in Thailand. After his return home, he studied NIACC in Mason City where he received his accounting degree.

John married the love of his life Nancy Winterton at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, Iowa, on June 9, 1973. To this union two daughters were born, Julie and Bethanie.

John had various jobs over the years that he loved, which included working for Firestone in Mason City. He used his accounting background and worked at Featherlite Manufacturing in Cresco for many years. He loved to work to provide for his family.

John had many different hobbies, he loved taking his boat out on the Mississippi River fishing, hunting, and bowling. The most important thing to John was his family. He made sure to care for them and provide for them.

John’s kindness, generosity, and unconditional love for his family will forever be remembered in our hearts.

John is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; daughters, Julie (Robbie) Yarbrough, Wetumpka, AL, Beth (Shawn Ahern) Pickar, Cresco, IA; brother, Alan (Tammy) Pickar, Belle Plaine, MN; grandchildren, Chelsea Rogers, Danielle Ahern, John (Rachel) Boyle, Andrea Clements, Josh (Kathy) Yarbrough, Amanda (Brandon) Spears, and 6 great grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Kenneth, Michael, Randy, and his sister, Cathy.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday April 4, 2026, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery- Elma, Iowa.
