MASON CITY – The vibrant world of elementary imagination has officially moved into the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum. The museum is proud to announce the opening of “First Artistic Steps,” the 42nd annual School Art Exhibition held in celebration of National Youth Art Month.

Now showing in the Museum’s Center Space Gallery, this year’s exhibition puts a dedicated spotlight on artists in grades K-4. The collection is a vivid testament to the creativity and wonder that define the earliest years of artistic exploration.

To celebrate these budding creators, a formal reception and recognition ceremony will be held:

  • Date: Saturday, March 28
  • Time: 11:00 a.m. (Ceremony at 11:30 a.m.)
  • Host: Alpha Delta Kappa, the honorary sorority for women in education.
  • Admission: Free and open to the public.

During the event, student artists will receive recognition certificates and awards, giving many their first taste of life as a professionally exhibited artist.

While the exhibition is a delight for the eyes, its mission is deeply educational. According to Mara Linskey-Deegan, Associate Curator and Registrar, Youth Art Month serves as a critical reminder of why art programs matter in our schools.

Beyond simply learning to paint or draw, art education is a proven engine for child development. The museum highlights several key outcomes fostered by quality school art programs:

  • Critical Thinking: Learning to solve visual problems and make intentional choices.
  • Self-Esteem: The pride of creating something unique from scratch.
  • Appreciation: Building respect for the work and perspectives of others.
  • Cooperation: Developing the social skills necessary for collaborative projects.

“First Artistic Steps” features works submitted by art teachers from the Central Rivers Area Education Agency (Clear Lake Regional Office). The exhibition will remain on display through Saturday, April 18.

As always, admission to the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum is free. Whether you are a parent of a featured artist or a community member looking for a dose of inspiration, the Museum invites you to experience the world through the eyes of its youngest citizens.
