MASON CITY – An attic fire at a Mason City rental house forced the residents to evacuate before firefighters arrived.
According to Randy Elsbernd, Assistant Deputy Chief, on July 31, 2024, at approximately 2:01 a.m. the Mason City Fire Department was dispatched for the smell of smoke in a house at 1421 N Madison Ave. Fire crews arrived and found the residents outside. Investigation found a smoldering fire in the attic of the house. Firefighters pulled ceilings to expose the attic and extinguish the fire. The rental property, owned by Steve Vandenberg, is no longer able to be occupied without renovation.
The cause of the fire was accidental and electrical in nature.
Emergency crews cleared the scene at approximately 5:00 a.m.
No injuries were reported.
Mason City Police Department and Alliant Energy assisted at the scene.
