MASON CITY – A local athlete who made history for Mason City High School was honored by the city council this week.
At the girls state wrestling meet in February, Layla Phillips won the state title at 105 lbs. Phillips pinned Mckenna Rogers from Solon to reach the finals. Int eh championship match, Phillips beat Kacy Miller of Western Iowa 9-4. This is the first-ever state title for a girl from Mason City.
At this week’s Mason City council meeting, Phillips was giving a certificate of accomplishment and City Hall released this statement along with the photo at top:
“Congratulations to Layla Phillips for becoming the first Girls State Wrestling Champion for Mason City! A proclamation was presented to her at last night’s City Council meeting proclaiming Friday, March 8, 2024 as ‘Layla Phillips Day’ in recognition of her remarkable achievements!”
