College Wrestling: Iowa State pins UNI, 27-14

AMES — UNI wrestling gave No. 4 Iowa State all it could handle on with upset wins at 125 and 157 pounds, but would come up short in a 27-14 dual loss to the Cyclones on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.

Northern Iowa earned victories at four weight classes and saw two Panthers make their first start in a dual in their college career, but Iowa State would pick up five victories in bonus points as UNI dropped its fifth straight dual to the Cyclones.

Trevor Anderson brought Panther fans to their feet in the afternoon’s opening match at 125 pounds against No. 24 Kysen Terukina. With a back-and-forth match running into sudden victory, Anderson scrambled to gain control and scored a late takedown to secure an 8-5 victory for his second ranked victory of the weekend.

In his second matchup with Evan Frost this season, Julian Farber (133 pounds) fell to the eighth-ranked wrestler in the nation in a 19-4 technical fall loss, while Cael Happel (141 pounds) challenged No. 9 Anthony Echemendia in one of the most anticipated bouts of the day. Tied at 6-6 after two periods, Happel gave up a late takedown to Echemendia in the final seconds, falling by a score of 9-6. At 149 pounds, Cael Rahnavardi would come up short in a 19-4 technical fall loss to No. 7 Casey Swiderski.

No. 15 Ryder Downey (157 pounds) pulled out the stops in the final thirty seconds when he gained a nearfall for three points, propelling himself to a 12-9 win over No. 14 Cody Chittum at 157 pounds. Downey extends his winning streak to eight consecutive matches and earns his fourth top-15 win of the season.

In his first career dual, Jack Thomsen battled No. 2 David Carr at 165 pounds but ultimately came up short in a 20-3 technical fall loss. Jared Simma would also fall short at 174 pounds, dropping a 10-2 major decision to No. 19 MJ Gaitan.

Topped-ranked Parker Keckeisen (184 pounds) made quick work of Tate Naaktgeboren in a 21-6 technical fall victory, his 18th bonus point victory and 40th career dual win. At 197 pounds, No. 20 Wyatt Voelker entered the second period scoreless against Julien Broderson, but scored late in the match for the 4-2 win. Adam Ahrendsen closed the meet out making his collegiate dual debut against No. 3 Yonger Bastisa at heavyweight, falling Panther number two making his Big 12 collegiate duel debut, Adam Ahrendsen competed against No. 3 Yonger Bastida in a 25-6 technical fall.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 18 at the Last Chance Open in Ames at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center.
